WHEN you think of opera, classics that have been performed for decades, even centuries spring to mind.
But as with any art form, while people will always love the classics, there's plenty of room for new work.
Commissioned in 1985 by the BBC for Glyndebourne, The Electrification of the Soviet Union is a relatively young opera.
Based on the life and work of Boris Pasternak, it explores the troubled life of the Russian poet in the summer of 1914 when the world was poised on the brink of cataclysmic change - war and revolution.
It is brought to the stage by Music Theatre Wales, who return to The Anvil following their stunning performances of The Lighthouse and Jane Eyre.
The company was formed in 1988 with a commitment to present newly commissioned opera and contemporary classics.
It has established a reputation as the leading touring opera company in the UK and has a growing international reputation.
The Anvil, Basingstoke, October 22. Performance: 7.45pm. Tickets: £14. Box office: 01256 844244.
