FORGET Russell Crowe's turn as General Maximus Decimus Meridius in Gladiator.
The ultimate tale of a man taking a heroic stand against oppressive Romans is Spartacus.
Spartacus is the epic story of the valour and fate of the man who led the uprising of slaves against their Roman masters.
It is brought to the stage as a dramatic ballet by Ballet Grigorovich at The Mayflower next week.
The ballet features powerful scenes of gladiatorial combat, a magnificent procession of Roman legions, a glorious feast and culminates in a final, tragic battle.
Spartacus is choreographed by Yuri Grigorovich, former artistic director of the Bolshoi Ballet who founded his own company, Ballet Grigorovich, a decade ago.
The ballet spotlights his genius as well as the talent of some of Russia's most celebrated dancers.
It features opulent sets, stunning costumes and a sensational score by Aram Khachaturian.
Ballet Grigorovich are also performing Romeo and Juliet at The Mayflower, October 25-26.
Mayflower Theatre, October 25 -26. Box office: 023 8071 1811.
