Newbury IV 10pts Basingstoke Griffins 31

Basingstoke Griffins never looked back after Dominic Laval had a clear run to the posts after just five minutes.

On 28 minutes, Mark Hemmings knocked the ball on and the scrum half fly hacked the ball forward and he picked the ball up to score underneath the posts.

Basingstoke then won a scrum and, after driving it to the line scrum half, Dave Luff picked up from the back to score. Just before half-time, Tim Morel scored a well-worked try in the corner.

Newbury were awarded a penalty straight underneath the posts, but they shipped the ball out for a try in the left corner.

Basingstoke hit back as Doug Elvy ran the full length of the pitch to score underneath the posts on 57 minutes and, after Nick Wilkinson had spotted Mark Hemmings and Chris Barrett all alone on the left wing, the fly-half chipped across and despite an awkward bounce, which took the ball away from Barrett, Hemmings picked up and strolled over in the left corner. Nick Wilkinson kicked three conversions in the victory.

Basingstoke Cavaliers 10pts Broadmoor 7

THE Cavaliers kept their unbeaten record and stayed top of the league with a heroic display against determined opposition.

For the first 15 minutes, the visitors had the home team stuck in their own 22 with some powerful attacks but the defence was strong.

After a missed penalty the Cavaliers struck back. From a scrum on the left, the ball was moved across the backs and new boy James Cotterall looped round and scored in the corner.

For the rest of the half, both sides tried to assert themselves but both defences held strong and at the break the scoreline was 5-0.

The second-half carried on in much the same fashion but, after the hour, the Cavaliers lost the ball in the loose and Broadmoor scored a converted try in the corner.

The home team raised their game with the forwards now dominating the scrums. With three minutes to go, the pack drove the visitors back into their own half from a good lineout move.

Kevin Whittaker then passed to Neil Barton, who beat two tackles and returned the ball to Whittaker to race in to score for a remarkable win.

Whitehall (Bristol) 0pts Basingstoke Under-16 62

THE Hope & Clay-sponsored Basingstoke Under 16s remain unbeaten this season after an emphatic win in Bristol.

Despite the long journey, 'Stoke threw off their usual slow start and immediately put the home side under pressure.

Points came regularly during the first half as Basingstoke dominated the game. Seven tries and four conversions made the half-time score 43-0.

With the result beyond doubt, and in the unseasonally warm conditions, Basingstoke were unable to maintain this pressure after the interval, despite having the advantage of the slope. However they still ran in three more tries (two converted) to give a final score of 62-0.
