Victory for Superted IV, Garnele, Seven Stars and Kokomo 65 yachts entered the Royal Southampton Yacht Club's two-handed Autumn Solent Double Race on Saturday 12th October.
The Committee Boat was positioned near Navigators and General buoy in the eastern part of the central Solent, at the start the wind was northwesterly Force 3 increasing to over 25 knots during the afternoon.
Class 3 (the Club-rated boats) were set away on a short beat to Deck buoy at 1010 and the remaining classes were unleashed at 10 minute intervals with the Multihull Class finally away at 1040. The Class 1 monohulls (the bigger boats racing under IRC Handicap) and the multihulls were set a 19 mile course.
After a 1.7 mile leg to round Deck Buoy the fleet sailed on port gybe with spinnakers set south to Seascope.
The different classes were sailing alternative courses generally in the area between Lee on Solent and the west side of the Bramble Bank.
Line honours for the 19-mile-long course set for the big monohulls and the multihulls was taken by Kokomo a Dragonfly trimaran sailed by James Stewart and Lucy Kennedy. Kokomo averaged 7.7 knots around the course, and was the multihull winner on corrected time with Farrier 24 Legless (John Santy) second and Farrier F28R Shakatak (Pete Jenkins) third on handicap.
Class One IRC was dominated by the Maxi 1100 Superted IV (Matt and Jean Findlay) which was first to finish by one minute and won on corrected time by three and half minutes.
Second was the X-332 La Nef IV (John Noe and Mark Bowers) with in third place the J105 Jos of Hamble (Clemency Williams and James Wardle).
Class two for the smaller IRC-rated boats saw the Dehler 36 Panache of Chris Hornsey take line honours by six minutes, corrected time victory by 14 seconds went to the Scampi Garnele (Chris Ruston and John Syms) from Panache with the Trapper 300 Google Eye (Pat Stables and Nigel Hunter) third.
Class three Club Class saw the Legend 37.5 Seven Stars (George Evans and Richard Spinney) take line honours by less than two minutes and corrected time victory by thirty nine seconds. Second place went to the Twister Brigand Chief (Peter Royle and David Goyder) with third the Sadler 29 Zumbido of Michael Hibberd and Ann Howard.
As the final event in the RSYC eight-race Double-handed Series and the four race Inshore Series the following provisional winners were declared:
Series winner IRC Class 1 Superted IV, inshore series: Jos of Hamble Series winner IRC 2 Class and inshore series: Hurrying Angel Series winner Club class and inshore series: Seven Stars Inshore series winner multihulls: Kokomo
