ANDOVER MP Sir George Young has welcomed the steps being taken by Hampshire County Council to improve security at Icknield Special School after it was attacked by vandals.
In a letter to Sir George, county education officer Andrew Seber says new measures are being put in place to help combat the type of attack suffered at the school, which left 17 windows and nine skylights smashed and asbestos scattered around the building.
The damage meant youngsters were unable to attend the school for a few days while repairs were carried out. The safety measures being introduced include removing a tree and resiting a shed to prevent access to the roof and metal fans will be installed on down pipes to prevent people climbing them.
"Further measures being considered include the installation of CCTV cameras and this course of action is being discussed with the headteacher," the letter continued.
Sir George said: "I was very pleased to hear that some cost-effective measures are being introduced to make it more difficult to access buildings, and I was pleased to see they are also looking at CCTV."
