Trojans and Southampton are sitting pretty at the top of their respective South Hockey League divisions after back-to-back wins from their opening two matches.

Newly promoted Trojans top the Hampshire/Surrey Regional Division on goal difference after beating Epsom 4-1, while Southampton share the Hampshire League leadership after a 3-2 win over Wimborne Wayfarers.

Trojans success at Epsom owed much to their goalscoring midfielders and defenders.

With the Epsom defence trying to mark Trojans strike force, midfielder Simon Lucas twice slipped in unnoticed to nail a brace while pivot Campbell Williams scored a third with a net busting strike.

Trojans best goal followed fine work by Craig Somerville, who set up Wayne Shepherd to fire home from the edge of the penalty area.

Among the four clubs to have scored a maximum six points are Basingstoke, who visit Stoneham Lane on Saturday, 1.30pm.

Southampton twice fell behind before a Bill Ashworth double sank Wimborne 3-2 at the Sports Centre. But Southampton twice capitalised on short-corner opportunities - Ashworth and Gary Watts each wiping out a Wimborne advantage.

It was against the general run of play that Southampton got their winner - Ashworth seizing on a pass from Neil Harber to brush past several defenders before slipping the ball past the advancing Wayfarers keeper.

Southampton are joint top in the Hampshire League with Weymouth and newly promoted Portsmouth & Southsea, who have each won their opening matches.

Greg Cox and Alex Bennett notched hat-tricks as Winchester overwhelmed Regional League strugglers Andover 6-2 at Chalton.

Despite enjoying greater possession, Andover fell behind to Cox's opener for Winchester, after which things got steadily worse for the North Hampshire club.

Dutch coach Merjen van Willigen, however, suggests that Winchester are "not there yet" in terms of a settled unit.

"Our defence looked stronger than against Basingstoke the previous week, but we need our midfield players to concentrate a little more on their defensive duties, otherwise we could get overrun by some of the stronger sides," he said.

It's not been the best of starts for Hamble Old Boys, who have an opportunity of breaking their duck when Andover visit Satchel Lane on Saturday, 1.30pm.

Old Boys, beaten 4-2 by Epsom in their opening game, went down 1-0 at Basingstoke.

Southampton University held Salisbury 1-1 in their season's opener at Wellington, but Old Edwardians, lie fastened to the foot of Hampshire League Division 2 after a 5-2 defeat by table-toping Fordingbridge.
