Winchester Dramatic Society, Chesil Theatre, Winchester.
IN the medieval and atmospheric Chesil Theatre (previously and still recognisably the 12th century St Peter's Church) Winchester Dramatic Society present 1890s New York City in this assured adaptation of Henry James' novella Washington Square.
Wealthy and widowed Dr Austin Sloper is concerned that his gauche daughter Catherine's charming but penniless new suitor is a mercenary predator.
All the cast deliver utterly convincing performances, particularly Anthony Dakin as the oleaginous Morris Townsend and Karen Fitzsimmons as the excruciatingly shy but increasingly hard Catherine. Tom Williams as Dr Sloper portrays all the facets of a complex character, the second act performance being particularly poignant as the ageing doctor begins to lose his daughter and his health.
The intimate set, without a formal stage, allows the audience to feel that they are inside the house with the characters.
