Romsey's Hampshire Division One match with Guernsey, that the home side won 22-17 on Saturday, could be scrubbed from the record and have to be replayed after the game was technically abandoned just before half-time.
With Romsey leading 10-7 just ahead of the interval, the visitors were forced to replace a second front-row player, having already lost their tighthead against JJ Barber ten minutes previously.
The rules state that the match is, after the referee makes the enquiry to the captain, instantly abandoned when no further players are available to fulfil a front row place and the game is classed as a friendly with uncontested scrums.
But the league organisers will await details upon receiving the match card and any indication from Guernsey that they wish to have a replay before they deem the match to be cancelled and a new date arranged. With it being the men from CI, they may not want the added expense of another flight over.
Pete Ellis gave Romsey the lead with a penalty, but they could not break the Guernsey resistance in defence until Nick Roach was on hand to take Darren Sharpe's pop pass, after Ellis' long-range kick.
But the decision to call for uncontested scrums took Romsey's potency from the game and levelled up the match. Adam Trotman scored before the interval, but it was sandwiched in between two Guernsey scores, which cut the arrears to just five.
Phil Heaven took advantage of some impressive running play to wrap up the match, despite a late riposte from the visitors deep into injury time.
However, it remains to be seen whether Romsey's four-match unbeaten run is allowed to stand.
