A LEGEND from an Irish village that talks of an old, broken spinster who was once a beauty forms the basis for this wonderful play by Ade Morris.
What a fabulous choice for the Study Gallery's first venture as a theatrical venue.
Madelyn is a spirited Irish girl struggling with small-town mentality and an over-protective, selfish brother, Liam, who wants her to remain a housekeeper for him rather than become a bride.
The cast of three give a powerfully moving performance that left many of the audience in tears. Ann Marcuson as Madelyn captures all the nuances of her character, slipping seamlessly between age and youth. Her singing of the song that gives the play its title is hauntingly evocative.
The talented Matthew Morrison portrays both the alcoholic brother and Mad Maddie's musical protg, Daniel, with complete conviction. Shaun Hennessy conveys beautifully the embarrassed timidity of a young, rural suitor. With a flick of movement, he ages 50 years, heartbroken but still faithful.
I was enraptured.
