MORE THAN 1,000 skaters are expected to take to the streets of Southampton tomorrow as part of a massive event aimed at promoting Anglo-French relations.
Five hundred French skaters are making the trip from Southampton's twin town Le Havre, in what promises to be the biggest in-line skating event on the south coast this year.
Euroblade 2002 will see the city's energetic enthusiasts of the in-line craze tearing around a 10km course through Southampton's scenic parks, in a celebration of street skating.
However, keen local skaters are being urged to make the effort and turn up, so as not to let the British side down.
The skating route will take the "bladers" through the Common and across the Central Park before heading into and around the city centre.
Street skating is a common event in Le Havre where the city authorities shut off part of the town every month to allow for these events, so Southampton City Council decided to copy their French counterparts and hold a joint event here.
Euroblade 2002 kicks off with a free breakfast for all competitors at 7.30am in the Guildhall. The event itself starts from northern Above Bar near the cenotaph at 9am.
Southampton City Council, which has organised Euroblade 2002, is keen to stress that the event is not a race, and there is no minimum age restriction or skill level needed to take part. But anyone joining in is strongly urged to wear protective clothing including a helmet.
To get breakfast, people are being asked to register before Sunday so that the organisers can get an idea of how much food is needed. Ring Craig Lintott on 023 8083 2077.
