Yet again, there was a splendid display at the St Cross Garden Society Annual Show, held at St Faith's Hall.

It also provided a fitting note of triumph for Michael and Christine King, who completed a "his and hers" double of trophies to mark his final show after 21 years as chairman.

Although entries were down from last year, there was good support for vegetable classes, cookery and craft along with floral arrangement and the special cookery class for men.

The general view from the judges was that the standard was good in all classes and, in particular, the craft.

The prizes were presented by Heather Sheriden, from Canada, sister of the late Sheila Vermeyden, who was society secretary for 17 years.

Mrs King, a long-serving committee member, won the Allan Brodrick Cup for most points along with a new trophy, given in Sheila's memory, for the most points in the cookery classes.

Mr King took home the overall runner-up Brother Blake Cup and the Theo Vermeyden salver for most points in the vegetable classes.

In addition, diplomas of excellence were awarded to Mrs King, for her collection of flowers, and to Mr King for his vegetables.

The Society Rose Bowl was won by Liz Peacocke for most points in the flower classes and the Vere Dashwood Cup for most points in floral art awarded to Anna Field. Rachel Moody won the Sparkford Cup for the highest points in the crafts.

The Family Cup was awarded to Mrs Dobson and Barnaby, who claimed two of the junior trophies.
