Winchester firefighters are advising residents not only to get a smoke alarm, but an emergency action plan as well.
The advice comes after a couple from Addison Close, Winchester, followed their own action plan after their oven burst into flames.
A spokesman said: "They were alerted to the fire by their smoke alarm and they helped to minimise the damage by following an action plan.
"They closed the kitchen door to stop the fire spreading and didn't stop to collect any of their belongings, only to telephone us.
"As a consequence, neither of them was injured and the damage to their home was confined to the kitchen."
The brigade used two breathing apparatus and the fire was soon under control. It is thought it was caused after the oven developed a fault and switched itself on. Unfortunately a pan of fat had been left inside.
