Hampshire County Council's Heritage Open Days were the most successful yet.

Over 5,000 people made the most of their chance to see some of the county's most interesting historic sites, monuments, buildings and beautiful countryside.

Hampshire Record Office was particularly popular, with over 200 visitors while staff at Bursledon Windmill say they had nearly 500.

A display of different types of bread from around the world, made with stone-ground flour from the mill itself, was very popular.

At Rockbourne Roman Villa, near Fordingbridge, a "Roman soldier" led a guided tour, offering his service for an extra day due to popular demand.

"We are pleased that the open days achieved what they set out to do, making people more aware of the many fascinating historic places there are to see and visit in Hampshire, and encouraging them to take a keen interest in the county's heritage," said executive county councillor for recreation and heritage, John Waddington.
