BASINGSTOKE and North Hants crashed out of one of the major knock-out competitions at the first hurdle on Sunday when they lost by 40 runs at Lordswood in Kent.
In the absence of Lee Nurse, playing for Berkshire against Cornwall in a three-day match at Falkland, Ian Maynard led the Basingstoke side and he won the toss and asked Lordswood to bat first in the first round Evening Standard Trophy tie.
Things looked hopeful when Lordwood were all out for 160, eight balls short of their 50 overs.
The chief wicket-takers were Rob Bowen (3-49) and former club captain Keith Harris (3-17). Seamers Chris Chandler, Jon Govett and Dean Nurse each took one wicket while 15-year-old Mitchell Stokes conceded just four runs from the five overs of spin he bowled.
Maynard led the Basingstoke reply with 25 runs and other double-figure contributions came from Ross Hunter (16), Danny Leese (15), Chris Chandler (15) and Dean Nurse (10).
The wickets were shared around by the home bowlers while, of the other Basingstoke batsmen, Bowen and youngster Joe Parfett each made seven and Keith Harris five. Jon Govett and Steve Rolfe were each out for ducks.
