WHEN I asked for poems from readers to mark the Jubilee, it was immediately striking from the verses that flooded in how much affection and regard the Queen is held, in spite of all the troubles of the Royal Family over recent years.
The poems I received were affectionate, admiring and, in some cases, toasting her long and hopefully happier future as monarch.
For many Daily Echo readers, the Queen represents a continuum, from a wartime past to a new future. In many of the poems, the British love of pomp and ceremony makes an appearance.
For many of you, the chance to celebrate Her Majesty in verse was one you really enjoyed.
State occasions are one of those nationally-important events which touch us all. We can all participate in them to some extent and we can all remember where we were when key state events happened in the past. We are able to find an emotional angle on the event ourselves. Perhaps the Jubilee stirs up wartime or happy childhood memories.
Poetry is the medium we naturally turn to at such times. It embraces the personal and the public in a way no other form of writing can.
I hope you enjoy these heartfelt poems by readers as much as I have done.
