ANDOVER police have renewed their warning to the elderly to ask for identification before letting people into homes after a pensioner had £800 stolen by a man claiming to be a council officer.
The trickster arrived at the 84-year-old woman's Shepherds Row home at 2.20pm on 22 May saying he needed to measure the windows. While inside, £800 cash was taken from the woman's handbag.
Pc Ted Reynolds, of Andover CID, said: "The woman phoned the council who did not know anything about the visit. We are appealing for any witnesses who saw anyone acting suspiciously in the area.
"We are also renewing our advice to people not to leave large sums of cash in the home and to check the credentials of any person calling at the door before allowing them into your home."
