ALL HONOURS have now been decided in the Basingstoke and District Table Tennis League.
In division two, RAF Odiham made sure of the title, as predicted. Two 8-2 wins enabled them to surge to a 16-point gap at the top. John Edbrooke led the RAF side in both matches with unbeaten displays in the wins over Ashford Hill and KG B.
The only upset was Paul Walker being caught cold by Pete Good, who recorded a four-set win.
In division one, Cannons had to beat Hannington B more than 8-2 to avoid the drop and they did this, despite losing the first match.
John Ahlan fought to an 11-8 win in the fifth set over Terry White but then Cannons woke up and won the next nine matches to secure survival. This was only Cannons' second win of the season.
In the doubles competition, Hannington D came out victors in the division three play-off final over KG D. This was sweet revenge as KG D pipped Hannington to the division three singles title.
The team of Peter Blunden, Llew Hughes and Avril Waters were the individuals who will be getting the silverware this time around.
In division one, Winklebury have set up a match against division A winners Centerprise International after topping division B, thanks to a 9-0 whitewash of Queens B.
This play-off match is likely to be played at the start of next season. Similarly in division two, KG C will play RAF Odiham. KG C ensured a final play-off after beating Labour A 5-4 after being 4-1 up at one stage.
In the well-supported team handicap competition, the young Coaching Lions team were convincing winners over Queens A.
The fast-improving Lions were represented by Chris Rogers, Sue Tompsett and Patrick Garlick. The game against Tony and Alan Palaczky and Alex Garlick had its result decided early on and the final games were a formality before the Lions lifted the trophy.
The annual Basingstoke Open Junior Championships took place recently with six titles being contested. Alex Garlick won the under-17 event with a fine win over Richard Dando in three straight sets, 11-9, 11-9, 11-8. Garlick then teamed up with brother Patrick to take the under-17 doubles with a win over Richard Dando and Alex Piper.
Patrick Garlick lost out on another winners' trophy, losing to Dando in three sets in the under-15 competition and also in the under-15 doubles when teamed up with Daniel Wong.
Again Dando was the victor with his partner Robert Wood.
Sue Tompsett was all smiles as she was untroubled, winning the under-13 event in straight sets, beating unseeded Robert Short.
Tompsett then partnered Tom Vince to take the under-13 doubles, beating Alex Piper and Robert Short.
