A POPULAR postman could have a street named after him in Basingstoke if a grateful couple get their way.

The idea is the brainchild of Katy and John Pearson, who live in Bridge House, off Harrow Way, where a new development is taking place.

John said he and his wife have become fed-up with the sorting office confusing their house with another address, half-a-mile away on Bessemer Road.

They have suggested to mail bosses that the road should be named after their regular postman Scott Haynes, because whenever he's working, the mail gets delivered to the right place.

Mr Pearson said: "Whenever Scott is working, we don't have a problem, but if he goes on holiday, then the mail doesn't always get here."

Scott, who has been a postman for 15 years, was taken aback when he heard about the couple's proposal to call the new development Scott's Corner.

Scott, who lives in Stravinsky Road, Brighton Hill, said: "I was surprised when I heard about it.

"I have been delivering post there for six years so I suppose I must have been doing something right."

Consignia spokesman Don Veale said a new address would help to avoid delivery mix-ups.

Neither Consignia nor the housing developer have yet made a formal request to the council.

In order for the change to go ahead, there would need to be an agreement with ward councillors and residents.

Paul Galliford, a spokesman for Basingstoke council, said: "The Royal Mail could not use an alternative road or street name without gaining the consent of the local authority."

He added: "The developer submits their request in writing to the authority to register the street name, along with details of the location and properties to enable the properties to be provided with postal addresses."
