Gurnard sailing Club on the Isle of Wight is keen to extend its training programme and the recent acquisition of six "Pico" dinghies will certainly be a great help to Club members wanting to improve their skills through RYA schemes.
During a ceremony at the Club on May 19th, the boats were blessed by the local Vicar, Reverend Graham Morris, whilst some of the Club's enthusiastic cadets looked on.
The Club Commodore, Paul Airey, said: "We are keen to encourage members who have completed a beginners' course to continue sailing. These boats, designed by Club member Jo Richards, will be used for our improvers' training programme and will also be available for hire for Club members - particularly those who want to start racing."
The children then had an opportunity to sail the new boats. In breezy conditions, experienced sailors took the helm.
One of these was the RYA Training Manager, James Stevens who agreed these versatile dinghies would be a real asset. Gabriella Southwell (11) was impressed: "It was great. They were the biggest waves I've ever sailed in!"
