CONSTRUCTION work is to get underway next Monday on one of the largest and most complex stages the Isle of Wight has ever seen.
A team of 80 workers are to start building the stage for the Rock Island concert, the launch event for the Isle of Wight Festival on June 3. Altogether, 60 articulated trucks are to bring the infrastructure for the stage over by Wightlink ferries.
The stage is being brought over from Belgium and will take more than 540 man-hours to build, using a 60-ton crane.
Either side of the stage will be huge television screens, and the whole set-up will be supported by six-miles of cables with enough power to support a small town.
Festival organisers said special computer-controlled sound systems will prevent noise travelling anything further than the specified distance.
The event will be officially opened at Seaclose Park, Newport, when Rock Island kicks off.
The musical talents of The Charlatans will headline the star line up at the rock event, the Isle of Wight's first major open-air concert after three decades.
Joining The Charlatans will be Robert Plant and Strange Sensation, Ash, Starsailor, Hundred Reasons, DNA Doll, Johnny 4, The Coral, The Bees and many more.
Tickets cost £35 and are available on 01722 327 676.
