WITH the UK property market in full bloom, finding a historic house for sale in a prime Southampton location is a rarity these days.

One special house is about to hit the city's market, with the kind of unique history that should see it fetch a very healthy price.

Located in the centre of Southampton Common, The Lodge House in the old cemetery is a Grade II listed building set in a peaceful setting adjoining an outstanding nature conservation site.

Built in 1848, the two-storey detached residence was extended in 1882 and, aside from a courtyard, also has attached to it the most unusual of extensions - a former Jewish mortuary chapel.

The chapel was built around the same time as the house and the marketing guide says it would make a perfect workshop or extra room for the house, providing the necessary planing permission is sought.

No anticipated price range for the four- bedroom, three-reception-room property has been issued, although the city council, which is selling it, hopes offers will be as high as possible.A spokesman for the council said: "The Lodge House is an attractive two-storey house, and was built as part of the plan for the cemetery, which surrounds it on three sides.

"It's a beautiful house in a lovely and unique setting, and we're sure it will get a lot of interest.

"However, we would point out that whoever buys it will be expected to carry out some much-needed repairs as well as some renovation work, as it is a listed building."

Informal offers for the property need to be in by noon on Monday, July 8 to the council's valuation and estates consultancy, and more details are available on 023 8083 2593.
