Rhinoceros, The Tower, Winchester
DAVID Benson, who had Tower audiences entranced recently with his one-man show about Kenneth Williams, moves one step closer to surrealism in his latest venture.
Benson has joined forces with Peepolykus - the three-man company famed for their unique brand of comic capering - for their new show, Rhinoceros.
The inspired core trio of John Nicholson, Javier Marzan and David Sant are also joined by two other actors for their first play based on someone else's text - in this case, a characteristically weird piece by that master of the Theatre of the Absurd, Eugene Ionesco.
The play concerns a group of characters who start turning into rhinoceroses. Sounds odd - and it is. But the beauty of Peepolykus, as anyone who has seen them will tell you, is in their brilliant balancing of so many different elements, from sublimely ridiculous clowning to verbal slapstick and visual surprises.
The company first formed in 1994, but only John Nicholson survives from the original trio. As well as four touring productions, the company have produced a commission for the National Theatre, a pilot sitcom for Paramount and various features for the BBC.
May 18. Performance: 8pm. Tickets: from £6. Box office: 01962 867986.
