Headley 1 Winchester City Res 2
HEADLEY felt they were robbed of another piece of silverware on Saturday as they were beaten by Winchester City Reserves in the final of the Hampshire Intermediate Cup.
Hampshire division two champions Headley dominated the early part of the game and looked to have opened the scoring, only for the effort to be disallowed as everyone lined up for the kick-off.
The incident started when the City goalkeeper pushed the ball out for a throw-in which was quickly taken by Chris Wye and Stuart Vosper coolly volleyed home from 30 yards.
As the players lined up for the restart, the referee decided to rule out the effort due to a foul throw.
Ironically, the opening goal came from a Headley throw-in later in the opening half.
Darren Gibbons this time took the throw to set Mike Balla free down the left wing. His cross found Chambers' head and Wye applied the finish.
After the break, Headley gave the ball away far too often and City equalised on the hour.
Four minutes later, Headley found themselves 2-1 down after a Winchester counter-attack.
Headley then pushed four up front but never really threatened to score an equaliser.
This left the team short at the back and that led to Matt Williams being sent off for a professional foul. Mark Buttress, however, saved brilliantly to his left.
This was not enough to spur on his team-mates and the final whistle blew shortly after.
After their final game of the season, Headley will look to secure their sixth title in a row in Hampshire division one next season.
