MARK Jones has been appointed as the new editor of Gazette Newspapers.

Mr Jones has been the deputy editor of The Gazette and its associated titles since February 1997. He has taken up the position held by Bill Browne for more than six years.

Mr Browne became editor of The Salisbury Journal series of newspapers - which, like The Gazette, is owned by Newsquest - at the end of March.

Before moving to Basingstoke, 38-year-old Mr Jones spent several years at The Southern Daily Echo in Southampton where he worked as chief crime reporter for four years before being promoted to assistant news editor.

He said: "I have very much enjoyed my role as deputy editor with Gazette Newspapers, during which time I have been fortunate to work with Bill Browne who is a superb editor.

"Gazette Newspapers is very much a part of the past, present and future in Basingstoke and Deane and I feel proud and privileged to be appointed as editor.

"It is particularly pleasing for me to be taking on this exciting role in what is, undoubtedly, a milestone year for the borough with the impending opening of the landmark Festival Place shopping and leisure complex.

"I am now looking forward to building on the good work that has been done in recent years at Gazette Newspapers with the marvellous team that we have in editorial and other departments."

Mr Jones is married to Donna, a freelance journalist and part-time lecturer. They have a daughter, Pippa, who is four on Sunday.
