Jason Laney struck a magnificent unbeaten century to take Hampshire's second eleven to an emphatic three day victory over Surrey at the Oval, with seven second innings wickets in hand.
Laney looked in imperious form for the whole game, having made 77 in the first innings.
But his chanceless 125 not out was just too good for the London side, and his display dominated the final innings run chase of 223.
Hampshire started the day needing to put in a good bowling and fielding performance, as Surrey were dangerously poised on 80-1 overnight, and they did just that.
James Schofield quickly removed the night watchman, but Surrey's danger man, Scott Newman, once again hit the ball very well, and Surrey looked as though they might post a formidable total.
Newman had just passed his century, when debutant Naqeeb Mohammed grabbed his vital wicket.
Mohammed bowled excellently in his first game at this level, ending with figures of 3-48.
Irfan Shah and Aaron Heal both bowled their spinners superbly, and the pair took four wickets between them.
They pegged back the Surrey scoring rate, as they were eventually all out for 277.
Hampshire's reply got off to a good start with Laney and Iain Brunnschweiler putting on 79 for the first wicket, before the second team wicketkeeper nicked one behind for 24.
Scott Cunningham helped Laney take the score past 100, but he lost his wicket for 11.
Alex Morris proved to be the perfect partner for his captain, as the left and right-handed combination yielded 90 runs, but Morris fell just before the victory for a well-made 51.
Laney finished the game in style with a straight six to take the south coast county to their first victory in their defence of the Second Eleven Championship
