IT didn't need extra-sensory powers to predict that Isle of Wight hammer thrower, Andy Frost, would be the outstanding field performer of the Hampshire AA Championships.

The 21-year-old powerhouse from Sandown travelled to Portsmouth buoyed by personal bests in his first two competitions of the season.

Having blasted into action with a 62.23 metre throw in an Isle of Wight open meeting, the big man arrived for the county weekend with a monster 65.01 effort fresh under his belt from the British Universities Championships, which surpassed the Commonwealth Games qualifying mark by one centimetre.

Last Sunday's winning heave of 61.45 was modest by comparison, but it was plenty good enough to better Frost's own senior men's Championship best performance of 59.16 and ensure that his county gold rush continued.

Impressively, he has climbed to the top of the medal podium in the various age-groups for seven years running and has never left the Mountbatten Centre without a new CBP in tow.

Currently based in Twickenham, where he is studying sports science at St Mary's University College, Frost is delighted but not totally surprised by his progress.

He said: "65 metres is not beyond what I'd expected to throw this season but I didn't imagine I'd do it this early.

"I think I could now be capable of 66 or 67 metres."
