A HEALTH centre manager in Ludgershall has warned that mindless acts of vandalism could mean medical equipment may not be bought because money is being spent on repairs.

Paul Bessant, the practice manager at the health centre in Central Street, says thousands of pounds have been spent making good the damage to the centre.

"It could possibly mean we will not be able to purchase a new ECG machine but I can't say exactly what it is likely to be at the moment," he said.

"People seem to think the NHS will make good the damage but it has nothing to do with the NHS the money must be found by the GP practice whose building this is."

This Spring the centre has been hit by a number of acts of vandalism including vandalised door sensors which have been smashed, replaced and smashed again even though their replacements were 10ft off the ground and guarded by metal cases.

"Over the May Day bank holiday a more sinister event occurred when the cover to the boiler exhaust was removed, and the flue was choked with stones, wood and plastic.

"Fortunately the medical professionals noticed the resulting smell and were able to move from their area without harm.

"However, the wood was very charred and could have caught alight."

Now the centre is looking at the possibility of introducing its own CCTV cameras but just one camera will cost £1,700 and it's money which would otherwise be spent on medical equipment for the people of Ludgershall.

Tidworth police spokesman, Sgt Paul Oatway, said: "We are extremely concerned that the health centre has been subjected to mindless vandalism.

"It is completely unacceptable and out of order.

"We would like to hear from anyone who may have information about this or who may even have witnessed these incidents." Those with information can call Tidworth police on 01980 842303 or the confidential crimestoppers number 0800 555111.
