THE continuing problem of parking in parts of Overton has been raised again at the monthly parish council meeting.
Resident Terry Robinson told councillors he has been campaigning for five years to solve the parking problems in Winchester Street, but that nothing has been done.
"Winchester Street becomes one narrow lane because of all the cars parked along the road and they are also parking on the pavement, which is illegal," he said.
"With more vehicles in and out of the village and more to come, something needs to be done."
Parish council chairman Cllr Lucy Sloane Williams said parking enforcement was being handed over to the borough council, who will be responsible for dealing with such matters, and the scheme will be in place by November.
But she warned that the police view the parked cars as a form of traffic calming as it slows people down.
Cllr Brian Langer added that because there are no parking regulations in Winchester Street, the borough enforcement officers will not be able to do anything and it will be up to the police to enforce it.
"It is most unusual where one of the main shopping streets in a place the size of Overton has no parking restrictions whatsoever and there is nothing at all in Winchester Street" he said. "It will be a problem if a yellow line system comes in because there are a lot of residents with vehicles but there are all sorts of problems in Winchester Street and a time limit will have to come in before long."
