THE Andover Reformed Church held a service of thanksgiving for the emergency services on Sunday for the fifth year running.
Jointly sponsored by the church and the Basingstoke and North Hampshire Industrial Mission (BANHIM), this year's service had an added poignancy because of 11 September.
But the Minister of Andover United Reformed Church, the Rev Derek Overfield, said it was made even more so by the train crash at Potters Bar on Friday and the house fire in Huddersfield in which five sisters and two adults died.
It was a well attended service with more than 150 people in the congregation. Guests included Andover MP Sir George Young, the Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire, Mrs Mary Fagan, and Test Valley Mayor, Cllr Jack Taylor.
The service was led by Canon David Tonkinson, who is the newly appointed BANHIM industrial chaplain in Basingstoke, and by Mr Overfield.
