VILLAGERS in Wildhern, Hatherden and Tangley will fight any proposals to develop housing on land north of Saxonfields.

They made their views known at a packed meeting on Monday evening called by Tangley Parish Council. Council chairman Nigel Bull said the land involved, about 25 hectares, was 'a hefty area' that was not included in the local plan.

"Everyone felt it is pretty awful. The land is not in the local plan but because the Hampshire structure plan says Andover has to accept 3,000 houses by 2011 the area is under threat."

Mr Bull pointed out Test Valley Borough Council's preferred area for 2,000 houses is at Finkley Down and the possibility is the Saxonfields area or land at Picket Twenty, the preferred area, could be used for the remaining 1,000 houses. The Saxonfields area had not been mentioned by the borough council but as more information was available the parish council would be holding further public meetings.

"This is development moving into real countryside," Mr Bull added.
