EDDIE ROWE watched Hampshire beat Oxfordshire in an under-31 friendly - and then admitted the performance had given him a king-size selection headache.

There were so many fine displays that Rowe has been left with the dilemma of who to leave out for Hampshire's under-25 Double Rink Championship match against either Oxfordshire or Kent on Sunday, June 2.

The Woolston club stalwart, who has taken responsibility for the juniors under the regime of new county team manager John Plomer, said: "The standard was so high and all the bowlers did Hampshire proud - it's given me quite a problem of the right kind for team selection."

Rowe will name his side after watching Oxfordshire play Kent at Oxford on Sunday.

Hampshire won all five rinks in an overall 120-77 victory at Old Basing. Their successful skips were: Paul May (Pyestock) 18-16, Paul Cooke (Southsea Waverley) 15-13, Leo May (Pyestock) 38-16, Simon Doig (Fleming Park) 27-11, Iain Bunday (Sports Centre) 22-21.

As Oxford could not field a sixth rink, two Hampshire rinks played each other, the foursome of Alex Vernal (Leigh Park) beating Matthew Hammal (Southsea Falcon) 23-13.

To develop and encourage youth bowls within the county, Rowe and Plomer hope to organise inter-divisional double-rink matches for the under-25s within the county as well as fixtures against some of Hampshire's senior clubs.

On Sunday Hampshire hold a Middleton Cup trial against Wiltshire at Atherley.
