HAMPSHIRE girls' tennis team were inspired at the weekend by Horton Heath star Lisa Radford.
The under-13 squad just missed out on promotion from Division 4B of the Junior County Cup to West of Scotland after an agonising games count-back.
But Hampshire number one Radford was the outstanding player of the weekend, finishing unbeaten in three singles and three doubles matches.
The first rubber of the weekend, held in Sutton, was against West of Scotland in what would prove to be the title-decider.
Radford got the county off to the best possible start with a comfortable 6-3 6-3 victory over emerging Scotland player Jenny Drummond, but there followed defeats for Southampton's Imogen Eldergill-Storm and Southsea's Lauren Clarke.
Hampshire bounced back through Ellie Linsell from Hedge End, who beat Katie Hamilton 6-4 6-4 to level it going into the doubles.
Radford and Tessa De Jouvencel teamed up to edge Hampshire in front, but the match was finally levelled when Lauren Clarke and Southampton's Rebecca Godfrey lost the final doubles tie.
The teams could not be separated on sets count-back at 6-6, but West of Scotland edged the tie by 52 games to 43.
In their next two matches, Hampshire responded well from the narrow loss to record solid 4-2 victories over Buckinghamshire and Lincolnshire and secure overall runners-up spot.
The victories were built around excellent doubles wins from Radford, De Jouvencel, Godfrey, Linsell and Eldergill-Storm.
Clarke also picked up a fine 6-3 6-1 singles win over Lincoln's Hannah Thomson. Results:
