THE licensees of the Dorchester Arms pub are to thank workmen who have been tearing up the road, despite the fact that it has devastated their trade.
Peter and Patricia King say the men were both helpful and pleasant while improving the notorious A30 crossroads outside the Hook pub, which is due to be officially opened today.
The junction has been the site of a number of serious road traffic accidents and, as a result, Hampshire County Council employed Mildren Construction to erect traffic lights at the crossroads.
Peter and Patricia have now had a banner made to specially thank the workmen for everything they have done.
"They couldn't have been more helpful," said Mr King.
"They came to see us to explain what they would be carrying out and how it would affect the pub, they kept us informed on a daily basis and tried so hard to ease the pain."
He added: "The major works caused considerable disruption because the contractors were constantly moving the entrance to the pub and customers kept away because they weren't sure how to gain access. They simply gave up trying.
"But we know that with the introduction of the new traffic lights, everyone will benefit from the improvements including us as all motorists will have to stop at the lights and will have full view of our pub."
