Nine Saxons 3, AFC Aldermaston A 4

THE WINNER in this exciting Supplementary B Cup final came five minutes from time at the Water End ground on Saturday.

Kevin Flain was the AFC Aldermaston hero, netting his second goal of the afternoon, but the game was marred by a sending-off by referee Jason France in injury time.

Flain caused the Saxons defenders problems throughout and in the first 10 minutes he forced a sprawling save from 'keeper Tim Wye and Flain's 30-yard free kick soon after hit the bar.

Kicking down the slope, Rob Carr had a good effort blocked and Flain threatened in the 35th minute.

Nine Saxons came to life in the 42nd minute when Terry Moth hit over a good deep centre and the header from Dean Hill brought a diving save from Ben Elliott.

Moth hit the post with the 'keeper stranded just before half-time.

It was the third minute of the second half when Saxons took the lead. Sean Smith, after a good run on the left, cut in and laid on the easiest of chances for Moth to tap in.

AFC were soon back on attack and James Barter had to clear a certain goal off the line from a header from James O'Keeffe who had come on as sub for Stuart Jones in only the 21st minute.

However, AFC found themselves two goals down in the 57th minute when Moth beat Elliott with a 15-yard fine shot.

It took AFC just two minutes to get back in the game after Graham Hill took advantage of an error at the back to give Wye no chance and seven minutes later AFC equalised. Flain's perfect low centre allowed an easy finish from O'Keeffe.

Only a further four minutes had elapsed before Saxons were back in front at 3-2. Dean Hill cleared the square Aldermaston back four and, at the second attempt, he put the ball in the net.

The game was never allowed to settle and within a minute it was 3-3, this time Joel Scotford taking his chance well.

With extra time looming, a 60-yard pass over the top found Flain, who muscled his way past his marker and went on to slam home the winner.

Two minutes of added time had been played when a fracas took place on the halfway line and, after consultation with his assistant referee and the fourth official, the referee decided it was Saxons' Steve Paddon who had to be shown the red card, despite irate team-mates and club officials feeling the wrong man had been dismissed.

The cup and awards were presented by Michael Castle, the Saturday referees appointments secretary.
