FORMER Basingstoke mayor Roger Morris has won his battle against a malignant brain tumour.

The 65-year-old, who served on the council for 34 years before stepping down in 2000, has been given the all-clear by doctors treating him for a "galioblastoma" tumour, which was discovered in February after he had problems with his co-ordination.

"Everything is alright and I feel extremely well," said Mr Morris, who finished radiotherapy treatment at Southampton University Hospital last week.

"I have no side effects from the treatment and I don't have to go back to the hospital.

"I would tell anyone who finds him or herself in a similar position that the most important thing to do is stay positive and focused on recovery."

Mr Morris (pictured), who lives in Cranbourne, remained in good spirits throughout his treatment.

In March, he told The Gazette that his experience of cancer had been life-changing.

"It has made me realise that work is absolutely secondary to family," he said.

"I have a marvellous wife, Susan, and children, Mark and Anne."

He added: "The NHS staff have been brilliant from the start. I have great admiration for them."

Mr Morris, who runs an in-surance business, said he may continue to work part-time as a consultant.

"I intend to get back to normal life, and take it easy," he said.

"I will be taking a holiday and will continue to enjoy spending time in the garden."
