A WILLIAM Barrett-inspired Hampshire tennis team missed out on promotion in the County Cup by the narrowest of margins.
The under-13 side were level with Berkshire on matches and sets won, but lost by two games after three days of intense competition.
Winchester's Barrett was the star of the weekend, winning all six of his matches. He was well supported by Hampshire's top two players, Pete Francis and Karim Aoui Chaoui of Southampton, who were each defeated only once in singles.
Also in the squad were Alistair Byron, from Winchester, and Basingstoke's Jack Waissen.
After narrowly losing to Berkshire on the first day, Hampshire came out with all guns blazing to defeat Durham/Cleveland and Hertfordshire 5-1 and secure the runners-up spot in Group 3A.
