WHO says nice guys never win? The gymnasts of Winchester's Henry Beaufort School have emphatically proved otherwise.

Not only did their pairs return with a medal of every hue from the Great Britain Schools' & Colleges Sports Acrobatics finals in Stoke-on-Trent, but their under-19s celebrated their first-ever triumph in the 'blue riband' floor and vault competition.

Proud teacher-coach Fran Arnold has no doubt about the secret of Henry Beaufort's success. She said: "The reason we've achieved so much is because we work so well as a team. Everyone is prepared to help one another.

"The older ones look after the younger ones and no one in the team will tolerate anyone being nasty. A lot of other schools have commented on how lovely our youngsters are with each other."

Four of the gymnasts are waving goodbye to the school this summer. Matthew Flye, who won gold with Cara Stepin in the under-19 mixed pairs competition, is off to train as a PE teacher, but will keep his gymnastics going.

Stepin and Amy Cogher have signed up for dance school and Mark Lee has his sights set on a career in leisure. Henry Beaufort medallists:
