SOUTHAMPTON CITY have run into early injury troubles for their Southern Women's League Division 2 campaign.

Outstanding triple jump prospect, Katharine Streatfield, who broke impressively onto the international scene last season, is sidelined with foot trouble.

Streatfield, 18, earned Scottish junior/senior and Great Britain under-19 call-ups last season and followed AAA under-20 silver with gold at the English Schools' Championships.

"Sadly it looks as if we will be without Katharine for a while," said team manager Pete Wareing.

In Streatfield's absence, it was City's middle distance runners who caught the eye in the opening-day trip to Hertford & Ware.

Junior Lucy Bowers started the season where she left off last year, running away early on to comfortably win the 800 metres in a personal best time of 2.24.6. Sally McGrandle provided winning B-string back-up in 2.39.3.

Lucy's sister Jodie also ran well to head the B 1500m in 5.23.4, with Sasha Mucci just pipped on the line in the A race.

In the senior section, Laura Brenton has really come of age and looks to have made the 3000m her own. She finished A-string runner-up in a personal best 10.51.2 and was also second in the A 1500m in 5.07.7.
