MALCOLM STOTE from Lymington was 'Mr Consistent' during the World Club Champion-ships in Holland where he helped the five-strong SAMF England team into silver medal position during the five-day event - landing some top fish during all of the matches.

Stote, a 35-year-old painter and decorator, came third in his section on day one after landing nine fish worth 308 points.

He again finished third in his section on day two landing 20 fish worth 656 points, his catch mainly comprised of whiting and dabs. Day three turned out to be Stote's best performance to finish second in his section with nine fish worth 330 points. Included in his catch were some good codling along with flounders, bass and a solitary whiting.

The final day saw many of the competitors struggle but Stote still manged to land a bass from A section to gain some more valuable section points.

This was the first time that the National Federation of Sea Anglers had entered a club into the event and to come away with a silver medal on their first outing was a real achievement.

The championships attracted 16 teams with the Dutch team coming out on top with 16 points to narrowly beating SAMF England by just one point. In third position was Belgium with 22 points followed by Germany and Gibraltar, both finishing with 24 points.

Competitors sampled about average sport during the Rovers Tackle mini midweek measure and return open held at Stokes Bay where they found thorneback rays, smoothhounds, pout, whiting, silver eels, plaice, flounders, dabs, bass and rockling all in a feeding mood.

Seventeen-year-old Lee Cullen from Southampton topped the 35 strong field with 14 fish worth 354 points to get the better of Chris Clark 288, Tony O'Grady 287, Mick Goodger 286, Darren Phillips 275 and Dave Ware 240.

The pool for the longest fish was won by Chris Clark with a 56cm smoothhound followed by Pete Tybinowski and Owen Blackman with hounds of 54cm and 53cm respectively.

The longest flatfish was a 41cm flounder bagged by Travis Webling from Southampton. Rover's next mini midweek pegged measure and return open will be held at Eastney on May 23 with fishing from 8pm to 11.30pm. Pout, silver eels and plaice are expected to supply most of the action for the event which has a £5 price tag and is pre-book only. Full details from Rovers Tackle on 01329-220354.

The action was not so hot during the Yeovil Open held along the Ferry Bridge section of Chesil where pout, pollack and pouting supplied limited action.

Simon Bowditch won the event with 9lb 11oz followed by 17-year-old Lee Cullen from Southampton with 5lb 15oz, Eddie Painter 4lb 2oz and Dave Lane 3lb 14oz, Lane also won the pool for the heaviest fish with a 2lb 6.50oz doggie.
