THE softer, gentler look of parking control in Winchester has been unveiled by civic chiefs.

The 21 city council parking attendants have ditched the austere all-black clothing for a blue uniform with reflective bands.

Parking manager Basil Davies launched a review of the uniform last year after former mayor George Fothergill criticised its gloomy image.

A parking attendant, who asked not to be named, said:

"The uniform is a lot more approachable. People have said it is more visible and presents a more friendly image.

"The staff like it, the lighter colour and the fact we don't get mistaken for police officers.

"We like to present a more positive image. Some people may think we are here just to issue parking tickets but we are willing to assist in many ways.

"People ask us where the cathedral is, where they can get a good cup of coffee and we help with lost children and lost cars."

The changes have been welcomed by Councillor Fothergill, whose comments sparked the review.

He said: "This is wholly acceptable. It gives a much gentler image.

"It doesn't stop them doing the job we expect them to do, which is a difficult one, but it will make the public feel more able to approach them."

Mr Davies said the revamp cost about £2,500.

"It has been money well-spent. We were going to have to buy new uniforms anyway.

"The public seem to think they are smarter."
