Whilst calm conditions prevailed in the Solent, the horizontal smoke from the chimneys at Fawley refinery demonstrated things were better in Southampton Water. With a committee boat start off Netley in a 9 knot maximum westerly, all classes made a good start. After the first round the windward mark was changed as the breeze had swung to the north-west.
In Class 1 Mike Garvey's success continued in the X332 "X-Parrot", which beat Ben James' H-Boat "Badger" by over 4 minutes. Class 3 racing under RSYC Handicap saw Big Boys Toys (Andrew Percival) take line honours followed by the Sigma 33 "Iskareen". Simon Forbes' Dragonfly "Scooby II" upset "Shakatak's" successful run in the Multihulls.
