HAMPSHIRE seconds chalked up their first victory of the summer with a 72-run success against the Hampshire Cricket Board at the Rose Bowl.
The second team included debuts for promising youngsters David Wheeler, David Griffiths, Eugene Burzler and Naqeeb Mohammed - all current members of the strong county under-19 squad.
It was a man with plenty of experience though, Giles White, who stole the show as he completed his third century in a week as the second team compiled a total of 290.
White was once again in control throughout his well paced innings, as he expertly picked off singles and decisively struck loose balls to the boundary, ending unbeaten on 110.
James Hamblin played a breezy opening innings of 38 from just 26 balls, and Jason Laney also looked in fine fettle with a classy 93.
The Cricket Board started well, with Damien Shirazi and Neil Randall at the crease, but Hamblin accounted for Randall in his fifth over. Roger Miller looked in excellent touch, and he and Shirazi took the score past 50, before Mohammed induced a false stroke and Shirazi was bowled for 28.
Irfan Shah bowled a fantastic spell of off-spin, picking up two wickets, but more importantly going for just eight runs in his allotted ten overs - increasing the required rate by the Board side to over ten an over.
Miller's dismissal at the hands of Hamblin for 52 essentially ended any hope of victory, and the second team ended up comfortable winners.
