The second day of four in the friendly between Hampshire Second XI and England U19s was largely affected by adverse weather conditions, as steady rain fell at West End for much of the afternoon.
The whole of the first session was completed, and Hampshire made early inroads with three wickets falling.
England's opening pair of Yorkshire's Alan Gale, and Nick Compton - grandson of cricketing legend Dennis - put together a solid start, against some probing new ball bowling from James Hamblin and Derek Schultz.
Consistent movement away from the bat by Hamblin was just too much for Compton as he nibbled at one and got a thin edge to depart for 24.
Kadir Ali replaced him at the crease but, after a few well-struck shots, his innings came to an early end with Lawrie Prittipaul sending him packing for 12.
Ali's slightly rash shot to the last ball of Prittipaul's first over produced nothing more than a fine graze to the keeper, reducing England to 51-2.
Gale continued to play steadily and was joined by Michael Pettini, and the pair took the score to 91 before a mix-up allowed a run-out chance, which was duly grabbed by Damien Shirazi, as he hit the target with just one stump to aim at.
This ended Pettini's stay which yielded 14 runs.
But this turned out to be the last piece of action as the rain frustrated players and officials, and the home side would have been looking to pick up more quick wickets this morning.
