A project to preserve red squirrels in Parkhurst Forest, Isle of Wight has been awarded a grant of £13,408 by the Local Heritage Initiative.
It is one of two grants to be awarded to Island projects under the initiative, with the other, for £15,630, going to the Wells and Pilgrim project in Whitwell and St Lawrence.
The red squirrel project will provide funding to create a viewing hide in the forest, for use by the local community, including schools.
Ian Boyd, director of Island 2000, which is behind the idea, said: "The inspiration for this project has been the widespread public affection for the Island's red squirrels, and the enthusiasm of community groups and volunteers for getting involved.
"On the way to the hide we plan to create an interpretative trail using carvings and information, to create a squirrel heritage trail."
The Wells and Pilgrim project aims to revive the pilgrimage and holy well traditions of the parishes of Whitwell and St Lawrence.
Two wells in the villages will be restored and refurbished, with access improved and interpretative material provided.
The pilgrim route from the coast will be waymarked with signs made by local craftspeople.
The Rev Sandra Lloyd, who is involved with the project, said: "There is a lot of support from a number of organisations.
"In refurbishing the wells we are seeking to raise awareness of their local importance and history."
