FAIR OAK'S Peter Francis found himself the victim of an upset at the Winchester Junior tournament.
The 12-year-old is coached by former British number one Chris Wilkinson. He had gone into the prestigious tournament in form after beating two higher-ranked players the previous week to reach the final of the Coombe Dingle event in Bristol.
Francis reached his second successive final, this time at Winchester, in the under-14 final.
And the top seed was involved in one of the best battles of the day, losing to Portsmouth's Dan Wyatt, 6-3, 6-1.
Francis, playing against older players in the under-14 event, also entered the under-16 section and battled through to the fourth round before losing in a three-setter.
Will Barrett from Winchester, had an easier passage in the under-12 boys singles, dropping just six games in his three matches on his way to winning the title.
Ellie Linsell from Bishopstoke eventually won the girls' under-12 title on a walkover. But she looked good winning her two matches in straight sets.
Sam Moreton from Basingstoke followed up success in the Hale Garden tournament the week before by winning the under-14, while Emma Retter from Basingstoke reached the 18 and under girls semi-finals.
Karim Aouichaoui from Southampton finished ninth in the under-12 international event in Wrexham which included all the top players in the country.
Nationally-ranked Luke Steere, from Horndean, reached two finals in a tournament in Sheen, Surrey, winning the under-18 final, but losing the under-16 event.
