Basingstoke Labour Club 1 Three Barrels 2

THREE Barrels had the edge in the Peter Raynbird Cup final at the Camrose Ground on Saturday evening against a below-par Labour Club, who missed their top goal scorer Lee Chambers and midfield man Carl Gilbert.

Barrels were without goalkeeper Adrian Hargreaves, who has missed just one game all season, so Scott Danna, with just one match under his belt, had to deputise.

He was called into action to make a sprawling save from John Batten in the 17th minute. Malcolm Leake, in the Labour goal, then did well to stop a side-footed effort from Martin Ging.

Another decent save by Danna, from a Ross Barnard effort, led to a break downfield, with Tommy Clegg sending Wayne Barber through the middle and he finished well for the Barrels lead in the 24th minute.

Barber shot a chance wide from a Billy Creese centre before the break.

Simon Lohrenz had a great chance to increase Barrels' lead in the 56th minute, after a poor clearance by Mark Smith, but blasted it wide.

At the other end, substitute Darren Eaton headed a far-post cross from Barney Powell straight at the 'keeper.

In the 65th minute, Barrels went two goals ahead when a cross from the right caused havoc in the box and Craig Luckens scored with an overhead kick.

After a chance for Labour, when Powell headed a cross from Smith wide, they managed to pull a goal back in the 76th minute to give hope. Danna failed to hold a cross from Ross Barnard and Alan Spacagna was on hand to put away the rebound.

A superb save from Leake denied a Wayne Barber hot-shot in the 90th minute and, in the fifth minute of stoppage time, Jason Cordery had a free header from a Smith cross but, sadly for Labour, it drifted wide.

The cup and awards were presented by the donor of the cup Peter Raynbird, the secretary of the Basingstoke and District Football League.
