AFTER a rousing start, Steve Spreadbury and skip Peter Ward bowed out of the Greengauge English Indoor BA pairs at Melton Mowbray in the second round.
The Atherley twosome gained an impressive 23-4 first-round win over Steve Mahoney and Martin Green, the Falcon Club duo from Essex throwing in the towel after just 13 of the 21 scheduled ends.
However, later the same day the tables were turned as the Hampshire pair became marooned on unlucky 13. They were only 18-13 adrift at 14 ends but failed to score again in a 26-13 defeat by England juniors Paul Coleman and Chris Young from Wey Valley, Surrey.
When Robert Newman comes to the Southampton Old Green next Friday, he will be there as the newly-crowned national indoor triples champion. The international from Reading combined with Whiteknights colleagues Mark Bantock and Richard Sampson to win the title 21-7 against Dorchester (Adam Tidby).
Newman, a member of England's Commonwealth Games outdoor team this summer, will be in town to open the new ladies' changing room at Old Green.
