THE Princess Royal arrived in Cowes this morning for the naming ceremony of Wight Lightning, the latest British challenger for the America's Cup.
She was met by the founder and chairman of the GBR Challenge team Peter Harrison.
The name of the British yacht was first announced yesterday on BBC TV's Blue Peter, after being chosen from 17,000 entries.
The Princess Royal was joined by the competition winner on the naming platform at the GBR Challenge base in Cowes.
Wight Lightning is the first-ever modern America's Cup Class vessel to be built in Britain, and has been constructed by a 22-strong team at Cowes.
This afternoon the princess was due to unveil the foundation stone of a £1m extension to the UK Sailing Academy at Cowes, and open its £150,000 yacht technology department.
