WHEN one of the Borough Council's officers organised the annual Test Valley Awards presentation night, he did not know that the final award of the evening would be presented to him.
Derek Grimston has organised the community awards scheme for a number of years so it was a fitting tribute that the final presentation night before his retirement should see his own efforts recognised.
Derek has been the Test Valley Borough Council Community liaison officer since 1993 following a career in the RAF.
Paying tribute to his dedication to the job, Test Valley Mayor Cllr Jack Taylor said Derek had always done more, and given more help to the community than his job required. He used the community Christmas Day lunch as an example - Derek organised it but also helped on the day.
The mayor said: "Derek has encouraged the Andover community by example, having had long- time commitments to the Andover Scottish Country Dancing Club and teaching the over 50s to play badminton.
He is also an Andover Green Badge Guide and presently chairman of that group.
"I know he will be missed by the whole of the Test Valley community," added the mayor.
