Sugar, The Phoenix theatre Company, Plaza Theatre, Romsey
Some like it hot - and this stage version of the cult movie is one of the most sizzling am-dram shows I've seen.
It centres around the outstanding double-act of Iain Steel and Wayne Ings. This drag duo dance, sing and act with dexterity and display superb comic timing. Jane MacKinnon also shines as the dizzy dame Sugar.
Sweet Sue and her giggling girl band make a first-class, animated ensemble and clever choreography by Gilly Jeffery creates slick dance sequences.
Many amateur groups fight against the limitations of a small theatre but director Angela Arney and stage manager Dave Free-mantle hit on simple solutions that worked perfectly. Sixteen quick scene changes, including a train, a bed and a boat, is no easy feat but was executed by a disciplined and organised stage crew.
With an accomplished orchestra belting out a great score of Dixieland jazz numbers, the only fuzzy end of the lollipop you'll get with this play is the one you buy at the interval.
If you can get a ticket, get to see this show!
